Your brake system is made up of a long list of parts, and on a diesel truck or trailer, every one of them is under serious stress. Hauling heavy loads, pulling trailers, and working long days all take a toll, and when you’re stopping thousands of pounds or more, there’s no room for brakes that aren’t working at 100%. Whether you drive a medium duty pickup, a semi, or a work truck pulling equipment, the last thing you want is to find out your brakes have failed when you need them most. When our team at Brookwood Truck & Trailer services or repairs your brakes, we check the entire system and take every factor into account.
HOW DO YOU USE YOUR TRUCK?
Long highway hauls, stop and go delivery routes, and rough job site or farm work all wear brakes differently. Your brake life depends on how and where you drive, how much weight you carry, and how many miles or hours you put on. It isn’t just about how long it’s been since your last brake job.
WHAT BRAKES DID YOU USE LAST TIME?
Brake pads and shoes vary a lot from one manufacturer to another. Organic, semi-metallic, and ceramic materials all wear at different rates, and heavy duty trucks need friction material built to handle the heat and weight of hard work. We use quality parts made for the job your truck actually does.
DO YOU TOW A TRAILER, HAUL HEAVY LOADS, OR DRIVE THROUGH STEEP TERRAIN?
The extra braking force needed for any of those wears out brakes faster. That’s why there’s no set mileage for diesel brakes. Two identical trucks can need brake work at very different times depending on how they’re used. What matters most is knowing the warning signs and getting your brakes inspected regularly.
Brake problems show up in a lot of different ways. Worn pads or shoes cause squealing or grinding, usually when you brake but sometimes constantly. If you have to push the pedal harder than normal, the brakes feel weak, or your truck pulls to one side when you brake, you may have a sticking caliper, a failing master cylinder, or a collapsed hose. On air brake systems, slow air pressure buildup, hissing air leaks, or brakes that are out of adjustment can all make your stopping distance longer and put you at risk. Warped rotors or drums cause pulsing or vibration when you brake, which hurts braking performance and can damage other components. Even if a symptom comes and goes, it shouldn’t be ignored.
Things to Watch Out For:
- Longer stopping distances. If it takes longer to stop, you have a problem.
- Low brake fluid. Your brakes may be worn out, or you may have a leak.
- A brake pedal that sinks further toward the floor than it should.
- A brake pedal that feels soft or spongy.
- Your truck or trailer pulls to one side while braking.
- Pulsing or vibration through the brake pedal or steering wheel.
- One or more wheels locking up or skidding while braking.
- Hissing air leaks or slow air pressure buildup.
- Your low air pressure warning light or buzzer comes on.
- Grinding, squealing, or screeching while braking. That’s never a good sign.
